Salina, KS—With the National Weather Service forecasting a wind chill of -15 degrees for Tuesday morning, many parents are wondering if classes will be canceled due to the extreme cold. Salina Public Schools has outlined its weather-related policies, emphasizing safety and clear communication to ensure families are prepared for any potential changes.

While there are no specific temperatures or wind chill thresholds that automatically trigger weather-related protocols, Salina Public Schools evaluates conditions carefully.

“Salina Public Schools may close school, schedule a two-hour delayed start time, or allow early dismissal in extreme weather,” explained Communications Director Jennifer Camien. “The superintendent of schools makes the decision after consulting with the director of maintenance and operations and others. Salina USD 305 may close school, schedule a two-hour delayed start time, or allow early dismissal in extreme weather. The superintendent of schools will make the decision after consulting with the bus company and the director of operations.”

Timely Decisions and Communication

The district strives to make closure or delay decisions by 5:00 a.m. to provide families with ample time to adjust their schedules. Media outlets will only announce school closures authorized by the superintendent or their designee. All announcements apply for one day only, and if no announcement is made, schools will operate on their regular schedule.

Parents and staff are encouraged to check for updates through multiple channels, including Skylert, the district’s rapid notification system, which sends alerts via text, email, and phone. Updates will also be posted on the district’s website at www.usd305.com, with radio and television stations beginning broadcasts at 5:00 a.m.

Impact on Meals and Transportation

On days with a delayed start, breakfast will not be served, and elementary schools will forego the choice lunch option. Parents and caregivers are advised to meet children at bus stops during emergency schedules or extreme weather. If the safety of a student is in question, the bus driver will return the student to school, and the parent or caregiver will be notified.

Emergency Planning Encouraged

Families are encouraged to establish an emergency plan for children in the event schools are closed or start late. Parents who are concerned about dangerous conditions may choose to keep children home, and such absences will be excused as long as they follow the normal absence reporting procedures.
