Sunset Elementary Briefly Shelters Students During Police Incident on Birch Drive

Salina, KS — A situation involving the Salina Police Department in the 900 block of Birch Drive led to precautionary measures being taken at Sunset Elementary School on Feb 4th. According to an email sent to parents by Dr. Brandon J. Cheeks, the school’s principal, all students were brought inside from recess as a precaution.

The incident, which took place earlier in the day, was unrelated to the school. "Keeping students inside was a precautionary measure because the police situation was not related to our school," Dr. Cheeks stated in the message.

He emphasized that classes and indoor learning continued without interruption, and at no point were students in immediate danger. "Our priority is always for the safety of your children," he wrote, reassuring families of the measures taken.

The nature of the police activity in the 900 block of Birch Drive was not disclosed at the time of the email. Local authorities have yet to release further details about the incident.
