Animal Control Advisory Board Split on Recommending Pit Bull Adoptions Outside City Limits

In a deadlocked vote Wednesday, the Saline Animal Control Advisory and Appeals Board failed to pass a motion that would have recommended allowing the city animal shelter to adopt pit bulls to residents living outside Salina city limits.

The motion, proposed during the board's general announcements section, sought to advise the city to officially permit the shelter to adopt pit bulls to non-Salina residents while maintaining the current breed ban within city limits.

The motion received a second, but resulted in a 4-4 tie when put to a vote, causing it to fail.

During the meeting, shelter representatives reported they currently house 21 pit bulls, representing approximately one-third to half of their total kennel capacity. The shelter has a total of 57 dog kennels available.

Shelter staff indicated they have been working on transferring pit bulls to other facilities, noting they had successfully transferred 10 dogs since the previous meeting. Current efforts include reaching out to shelters in Colorado, Oklahoma, and Nebraska to potentially transfer more animals.
