Animal Control Advisory Board Recommends Euthanizing Dogs in Shelter for More Than One Year

The Saline Animal Control Advisory and Appeals Board voted Wenesday to recommend the humane euthanasia of dogs that have been housed at the Salina Animal Shelter for more than one year.

The issue was raised during discussion of concerns about long-term animal housing at the shelter.

The motion passed with a majority vote after brief discussion about the impact of extended shelter stays on animals. Board members noted that a year is a significant amount of time for a dog to remain in a kennel environment.

According to shelter representatives, the facility currently houses 21 pit bulls, some of which have been at the shelter for extended periods. When asked about the current policy, shelter staff indicated they consider euthanasia based on veterinarian recommendations rather than strictly on time limits.

"We are not euthanizing as soon as six months happens. It is still vet recommended," said shelter representative Monique Hawley during the meeting.

Staff noted they attempt to find rescues and transfer options for animals that have been at the shelter for extended periods, but indicated these efforts have become increasingly difficult.

"Getting animals to a rescue right now is absolutely hard," Hawley explained, noting that many rescue organizations across the region are at capacity.

The board's recommendation does not create a mandatory policy but provides guidance to the shelter regarding animals that have been housed for extended periods.
