KWU Women’s Basketball Nearly Pulls Off Upset of No. 16 Dakota State

The Kansas Wesleyan Women's Basketball team nearly scored a big upset win on Saturday against Dakota State, but came up just short in a 70-67 decision to the Trojans.

Dakota State led by 16 at the half, 40-26, and extended the lead to as many as 18 early in the third quarter before the Coyotes started the rally.

A 3-pointed by Jill Stephens cut DSU's lead to nine with 4:39 left in the third, and another Stephens triple in the quarter cut the difference to seven at 52-45. DSU led 56-47 at the third quarter break.

DSU pushed its lead out to 14 with 6:50 left, but the Coyotes would turn the tides. Angel Lee's bucket with 5:11 to go cut the difference to five, capping a 10-1 run  that made it 62-57. Lee's bucket with 2:37 left got the Coyotes within a point at 64-63, and a score by Daijane Adams with 2:20 to go again got the Coyotes within a point.

LaMyah Ricks' bucket with 10 seconds left made it a 2-point game at 69-67, and Catherine Bowman's try at a game-tying three would rim out and DSU held for the win.

Stephens led the Coyotes with 15 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds to lead the Coyotes on the glass. Adams scored 12 for the Coyotes while Hampton Williams had seven rebounds. KWU was 25 of 65 shooting for 38.5 percent in the game.

The Coyotes are back in action with a pair of home games next week to open KCAC play. KWU hosts Friends on Wednesday at 6 p.m., and welcomes conference newcomer Evangel to Mabee Arena next Saturday at 5 p.m.
