West Walnut Street will be temporarily closed to through traffic starting Tuesday, August 12, as Boretec, LLC conducts essential water main valve replacement work between South Broadway Boulevard and South Chicago Street.
The construction project will require removal of existing sidewalk and pavement to replace two aging water main valves, prompting significant traffic restrictions in the area. Access onto West Walnut Street from South Broadway Boulevard will be completely prohibited during the work period.
"West Walnut Street will be closed to through traffic west of South Chicago Street," city officials announced. However, residents living on the affected stretch will maintain access to their properties via South Chicago Street.
The utility work is scheduled to span two days, with crews expecting to reopen reduced-width lanes along West Walnut Street by Wednesday, August 14, weather permitting.
Safety measures will include appropriate barriers around the work zone to protect both construction crews and the public. City officials are advising motorists to expect minor delays and to seek alternate routes when possible to avoid the construction area.
Pedestrians will also face temporary inconvenience, as sidewalks in the work zone will be inaccessible. Posted detour signs will direct foot traffic around the construction site.
The water main valve replacement is part of ongoing infrastructure maintenance efforts to ensure reliable water service for area residents and businesses.
