Salina, KS — Authorities in Salina are investigating a medical incident at South High School on Tuesday morning in which two students were transported to the hospital. While some premature reports from local media suggested that fentanyl might have been involved, both USD 305 and the Salina Police Department have stated that there is no evidence at this time linking the incident to fentanyl.
Salina EMS responded to South High School around 11:15 a.m. following reports of two students experiencing a “medical episode.” According to Jennifer Camien, Communications Director for USD 305, the students were assessed on-site and then transported to the hospital for further medical attention.
Captain James Feldman of the Salina Police Department further clarified that the symptoms observed do not match those typically associated with fentanyl exposure. “It’s too premature to say it was fentanyl overdose, and these symptoms don’t particularly match fentanyl. They indicated there was an elevated heart rate and chest pain; usually, with fentanyl, it’s a decrease in heart rate.” Feldman added that a THC vape was located nearby, though initial investigations suggest it was not the device reportedly being passed among the students. “The case is still under investigation, and our SRO [School Resource Officer] is looking into it, along with the school,” he noted.
USD 305 and Salina police are collaborating to complete the investigation and address any concerns within the school community. Updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
