Equity Bank Business of the Month: Service Master of Salina
Dewayne and April Russell

When Dewayne and April Russell purchased ServiceMaster of Salina, they didn’t just acquire a business—they embraced a legacy that has been nearly half a century in the making. Founded 48 years ago, ServiceMaster of Salina has long been a trusted name in cleaning and restoration services in this central Kansas community. Under the Russells’ leadership, that legacy is not only being preserved but also revitalized, blending tradition with innovation and a deep commitment to their neighbors.

“We bought an existing business based on the reputation and longevity in the community,” Dewayne Russell said, reflecting on their decision to invest in a franchise with such deep roots. For the Russells, the appeal was clear: an opportunity to build upon a solid foundation, enhancing the company’s reach while staying true to the values that made it a household name.

ServiceMaster of Salina sets itself apart in a competitive field with a distinctive approach to service, rooted in expertise and collaboration. “Our edge comes from our certifications, specialty products, and access to training centers around the country,” Dewayne explained. “Being part of a larger network of franchise owners allows us to collaborate on bigger projects and provide our customers with comprehensive service.” The use of private label products exclusive to ServiceMaster franchises also gives them a unique advantage, ensuring consistent and high-quality results. “These products allow us to offer something truly distinctive,” he added.

Like many small business owners, the Russells have faced their share of challenges, particularly when it comes to staffing—a common issue for businesses across the country. “Staffing has been an ongoing issue in the past 3-4 years,” Dewayne said. However, the Russells have managed to navigate this challenge with the help of a dedicated team. “Our current staff has been willing to step up, work overtime, and provide quality service to our clients,” he continued, emphasizing the resilience and commitment of their employees.

Despite the challenges, the Russells find immense satisfaction in their day-to-day operations. “Every day is unique in challenges and opportunities,” April Russell shared. “We are motivated by helping customers improve their workplaces and homes.” This enthusiasm for their work is evident in every facet of their business, driving them to deliver exceptional service and engage deeply with their community.

The Russells’ commitment to Salina extends beyond their business. They are active supporters of local theater productions, sports teams, and community outreach programs. “The community plays a significant role in our business,” April said. “It’s important for us to give back in any way we can.” This deep-rooted engagement with the community has helped solidify ServiceMaster of Salina’s reputation as a business that truly cares about its neighbors.

In 2021, the Russells expanded their operations by acquiring the ServiceMaster franchise in Concordia, Kansas, which extended their territory into Nebraska. “Acquiring the Concordia franchise, which has its own 32-year history, allowed us to expand our footprint and serve more customers,” Dewayne explained. This strategic move has also enabled them to streamline their focus on key services such as water mitigation, carpet cleaning, tile and grout cleaning, strip and wax, and janitorial services, allowing them to better meet the needs of their customers. “We’ve cut some services and become more specialized, adapting to what our customers really need,” he added.

Looking ahead, the Russells are focused on growth—both for their business and their team. “We want to continue providing the same quality service, but also invest more in our employees with training and equipment,” Dewayne said. “It’s about ensuring that both our staff’s future goals and the goals of our clients are met.” Their approach is clear: empower their team to grow alongside the business, fostering a culture of excellence and satisfaction.

For those contemplating starting their own business, the Russells offer simple but powerful advice: “Look for a need in your community and then plan to service it with excellence,” Dewayne said. Their journey with ServiceMaster of Salina is a testament to this philosophy—a blend of respect for a well-established brand, a commitment to quality, and an unwavering dedication to community.

In a time when small businesses face countless challenges, ServiceMaster of Salina continues to thrive under Dewayne and April Russell’s leadership. Their story is one of honoring tradition, embracing innovation, and believing in the power of community—proving that with the right blend of ingredients, a business can not only survive but flourish for generations to come.
