Elderly Woman Targeted in Scam, Loses $2,500

On June 7th, the Saline County Sheriff's Office took a report from a 78-year-old woman who fell victim to a scam that began on June 5th. The woman received a call instructing her to withdraw $5,500 in cash and mail it in a box via UPS. Fortunately, the bank intervened and prevented the cash from being sent.

The victim was also instructed to purchase $1,000 in Sam's gift cards and $1,500 in Lowe's gift cards, which she provided to the scammer. Later, she received a fraudulent call appearing to be from the sheriff's office. Realizing it was a scam, she hung up. The woman suffered a total loss of $2,500.

The Saline County Sheriff, Roger Soldan, reminds the public that they never request money over the phone and urges the public to consult their banks directly if they receive suspicious requests.
