The Salina Police Department responded to a call from Salina Grace Day Shelter on April 2nd regarding a belated burglary at their new location on 315 South Broadway Boulevard.
Employees arriving for work at 7:15 am discovered snacks missing from the back counter and noticed footprints on furniture. Surveillance footage revealed a white male inside the business after closing on April 1st, the shelter's first day at the new location.
The suspect, identified as Justin Chappell, 33, of Salina, had hidden inside the building while employees were closing on April 1st. He allegedly committed the offenses after the employees left. It is uncertain when he exited the building. However, he returned to the day shelter on April 2nd for lunch and was subsequently taken into custody by officers. Charges of burglary and theft are being pursued. Chappell is a client of Salina Grace.
