In an evenly contested softball match at the State Tournament Thursday, the Salina South Cougars emerged on top against Basehor-Linwood with a scoreline of 2-1. South jumped out to a lead in the second inning and that was all that starter, Araceli Rivas needed. Rivas had an exemplary showing over seven innings included allowing just one run and five hits, while striking out 12 batters. On the offensive front, Emily Anderson stood out for South Cougars Varsity with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate. Overall, the match was a testament to the pitching strengths of both teams. However, South's early scoring and Araceli Rivas's excellent pitching secured the victory.
The Cougars head out for Day 2 this morning, playing two games to finish their run at State competition.
