Ultrathin Bonded Asphalt Surface Project Continues

APAC Shears of Salina will continue the City of Salina’s annual ultrathin bonded asphalt surface (UBAS) project from Monday, August 19, through Friday, August 23, weather permitting. This phase is part of the ongoing effort to maintain and extend the life of roads throughout the city.

Motorists are advised to avoid work zones when possible or proceed with caution to ensure the safety of the crews working on the project.

The UBAS method involves applying a thin layer of coarse aggregate hot mix over a specialized asphalt membrane in a single pass with a spray paver. This technique helps prevent water from seeping into the asphalt and creates a strong bond with the existing road surface. The resulting overlay allows water to disperse quickly, reducing spray from vehicles and improving visibility and traction in wet conditions. UBAS has been successfully used in other cities and is known for providing a good friction surface, particularly in wet weather.

This week’s work represents the second installment of the City of Salina’s 2024 UBAS maintenance project, with the total project cost estimated at $642,400.
