Theatre Salina is one of the first community groups in the nation to be given the opportunity to produce Come From Away. This remarkable musical tells the true story of the small town of Gander, Newfoundland, which doubled in size within hours on 9/11 when 38 planes were diverted there. The show captures the humanity, generosity, and humor that connected 7,000 residents with 7,000 unexpected guests, forming lifelong friendships and unforgettable stories.
Thanks to a generous grant from the Jack Wilson Charitable Trust, Theatre Salina will offer a free performance on September 11, 2025, at 7 PM for first responders including firemen, police officers, dispatchers, EMTs, and nurses. Each first responder may also bring one guest.
Twelve talented actors portray more than 50 characters, ranging from the mayor of Gander and the woman who runs the animal shelter to a rookie news reporter and Beverley Bass, the first woman to become a captain for a major airline. The story blends stirring music, heartfelt moments, and humor into an award-winning production.
Come From Away has received Tony, Drama Desk, Outer Critics Circle, and Olivier awards and has toured the United States, Europe, Asia, and Canada. Theatre Salina is among the first community theatres given the honor of producing this celebrated musical.
The creative team includes musical direction by Tyler Brenaman, choreography by Maggie Spicer Brown, set design by Josh Morris, lighting and sound design by J.R. Lidgett, costume design by Jenn Morris, and direction by Michael Spicer. Come From Away will open Theatre Salina’s 65th season.
