SALINA, KANSAS — After 25 years under the steady hand of longtime owner Jim Loader, The Market Shop has entered a new chapter. The downtown Salina mainstay, known for its home décor, gifts, and gourmet selections, has officially transitioned to new ownership — the Cole family, who bring with them both local roots and fresh ideas.
The family announced the news this week, sharing their excitement for what’s ahead. “We’ve been busy bees ordering incredible new items to add to the traditional favorites already here,” they said. “We’re thrilled to be home in downtown Salina and look forward to welcoming you into The Market Shop.”
The Coles — Amy, Jeremiaha, Gannon, and Stratton — say the business will remain true to its well-loved charm while expanding its product lines. Amy leads much of the buying, while Jeremiaha and the boys have helped introduce items geared toward outdoor enthusiasts and men’s gifts. Clothing for men will also make its debut once the first shipment arrives.
“We’re an active family who loves to travel, cook, eat, and do anything outside,” they shared. “There are even two labs in our family — and they definitely picked out some things for you to take home.”
The transition marks a smooth handoff from Loader, who announced his retirement earlier this fall after decades of business downtown. Known for his vision and resilience through years of economic and physical change on Santa Fe Avenue, Loader called his time at The Market Shop “a blessing” and said he hoped someone would continue what he built.
That wish has now been fulfilled. The store remains open and vibrant, with new products arriving regularly as the Coles settle in.
For shoppers, it means the best of both worlds — the warmth and curation of a Salina classic, paired with the energy of a new generation ready to make it their own.
