KWU Softball sweeps Hastings

Kansas Wesleyan Softball posted a doubleheader sweep over the Hastings College Broncos on Tuesday afternoon at Salina South High School.
 
The Coyotes picked up a 4-0 win in the opener, and came away with a 9-1 run-rule win in the second game.
 
In the opener, the Coyotes took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning as Josie Buhr led off with a walk, then scored on Trenity Miller's ground out to first.
 
Starting pitcher Caitlyn Collier held the Broncos without a hit until the fourth inning as the Broncos put two runners on before Miranda Fogal came to the circle in relief in the inning. After a walk, Fogal sat down the next two batters on strikeouts.
 
Buhr drove in a run in the bottom of the fifth inning on a single after Anne Thibert walked and Cristabelle Alvarado reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt attempt.
 
Wesleyan added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth as Hailey Summers led off with a single, and after a fielder's choice, Jocelyn Alcala tripled home pinch runner Ollievia Lowe and Thibert drove in a run with a ground out.
 
Seven different Coyotes had hits in the game. Collier got the win in the circle going four and a third allowing two hits with five strikeouts. Fogal got the save going two and two-thirds allowing one hit and striking out six.
 
In the second game the Coyotes scored five in the first inning capitalizing on an error to start the inning when Buhr reached on the miscue then went to second on a second error. After two outs, the Coyote rally started with a RBI double by Summers, an RBI single by Alcala, and after KWU loaded the bases, runs scored on Grace Pierce's single, Lowe's walk, and Buhr's single.
 
In the third, the Coyotes added four more runs, using three hits to load the bases by Keira Hammen, Pierce and Lowe. Buhr drove in the first run on a hit by pitch, Fordham got a run with a walk, and Summers singled home two runs to make it 9-0.
 
Hastings got its lone run of the game on a double in the fourth.
 
Jewell Henry got the win going three and a third innings allowing one run on six hits. Halley Asbury closed it out with an inning and two-thirds of work, allowing one hit.
 
Summers and Pierce had two hits for the Coyotes. Summers drove in three runs, and Buhr drove in two.
 
Wesleyan is off until Monday, when the Coyotes host Peru State College. The games will likely be played at Berkley Family Recreation Complex on Markley Road in Salina, due to the fields at Salina South being used and Bill Burke Park's fields being unavailable due to renovations.
