Saline County Sheriff’s Office K-9 Maggie Retires After Seven Years of Service

SALINE COUNTY, KS – 4:20 PM / July 29, 2025 — The Saline County Sheriff’s Office has announced the retirement of K-9 Maggie, a dual-purpose law enforcement canine who served the community with distinction from March 2018 to June 2025.

Partnered throughout her career with Deputy Craig Norris, Maggie played a vital role in numerous operations within Saline County and in support of surrounding agencies. Over the course of her service, she was credited with numerous drug seizures, arrests, and the recovery of firearms and U.S. currency.

According to department records, K-9 Maggie was deployed 423 times for vehicle sniffs and 22 times for suspect tracking. Her efforts led to six criminal apprehensions and the seizure of various narcotics, including:

  • 1.90 grams of heroin
  • 168 pounds of marijuana
  • 54.50 grams of cocaine
  • 15.05 pounds of methamphetamine

Maggie was certified through the Heart of America Police Dog Association and received multiple accolades during her career, including 1st Place Patrol Dog in 2021 and Patrol Dog Case of the Year in 2024.

Her retirement was prompted by the onset of arthritis in her hind legs. Maggie will now enjoy retirement in the care of her longtime handler, Deputy Norris.

Deputy Norris recalled several memorable deployments that highlighted Maggie’s skill and contribution to public safety. One such incident occurred in March 2021, when a traffic stop on I-135 led to the discovery of methamphetamine and stolen industrial copper, helping resolve a local burglary case.

Another significant deployment took place in August 2021 during a traffic stop on W. Crawford Street. Maggie’s alert led to the discovery of a firearm and approximately half a pound of methamphetamine.

In July 2024, Maggie successfully tracked a felony suspect who had fled from Salina Police. The search led to the discovery of the suspect hiding in a detached garage. Maggie apprehended the individual, resulting in a peaceful surrender.

The Sheriff’s Office praised both Maggie’s contributions and the commitment of Deputy Norris. “I want to take a moment to recognize the value of a good law enforcement canine at the end of her career and the exceptional dedication that Deputy Craig Norris has shown in his role as a handler,” the statement read.

K-9 Maggie now enjoys a well-earned retirement at home with Deputy Norris.
