Salina Symphony Season Opens Oct. 1 with “The Roaring Twenties”
Kick off the Salina Symphony season with the sounds and spirit of The Roaring Twenties on Sunday, October 1, at 4 p.m. at the Stiefel Theatre.
The concert will open with Audrey Kelley’s Speakeasy: Four Vignettes of the Roaring Twenties. The orchestra will then perform Sibelius’ sweeping one-movement Seventh Symphony.
After intermission, Grammy-award winning Afro-Cuban jazz pianist Nachito Herrera will thrill the audience with a riveting performance of Gershwin’s iconic Rhapsody in Blue. The evening will end with a dazzling display of virtuosity featuring Herrera’s original compositions melding classical and Latin rhythms.
Guest Artist
Two-time Grammy Award winner Ignacio “Nachito” Herrera is a formidable pianist, described by All About Jazz as having “stepped onto the national stage as a fully evolved artist, brimming with confidence, in total command of a vast array of traditional and contemporary Cuban idioms, and imparting a virtuosic touch on all aspects of this shimmering production.”
Herrera has played at many of the world’s finest concert halls and prestigious jazz festivals. As soloist with orchestra, he has appeared with the National Symphony Orchestra of Cuba, Minnesota Orchestra, and Naples Philharmonic Orchestra, among many others.
As a pianist, music director, composer, arranger, producer, and recording artist, Herrera has worked with such groups as the Buena Vista Social Club, Cubanismo, and Afro-Cuban All Stars.
