SALINA, Kan. — Laura Jeanne Currie, a resident of Salina, has found herself entangled in a series of legal issues over the past few years, ranging from animal-related charges to harassment. Alongside her legal challenges, Ms. Currie has been actively advocating for the removal of the Pit Bull breed ban in Salina, reaching out to city officials and commissioners.
In 2023, Ms. Currie's legal issues included charges for failing to vaccinate and register her animals, as well as repeatedly allowing her animals to run at large, leading to nuisance complaints. One incident in December 2023 alleged her animal attacked or injured other animals or persons.
Ms. Currie faced battery charges and other animal-related offenses by the end of 2023 and into early 2024. Additional charges of harassment by telecommunications device and interference with law enforcement were also placed.
Ms. Currie has actively engaged with Salina city officials in her advocacy focuses on the Pit Bull breed ban in Salina, a contentious issue that has sparked debate among residents and officials alike. We spoke with Deputy City Manager Jacob Wood, who confirmed that Ms. Currie had reached out to the City of Salina Manager's office and sent multiple emails to the Salina City Commission pertaining to collecting additional information on the breed ban laws in place in the city.
An official statement from Salinans Against BSL clarified their stance on Ms. Currie's affiliation with their organization:
“Laura Currie, Salina Paws United, and any other alias that was created by Laura is not affiliated with us (Salinans Against BSL) in any way. Our group is focused on the repeal of BSL in Salina. We believe each individual should have a choice of what dog they want to own and not be dictated by the government. We also like to highlight the importance of good dog ownership for every breed. We hope that this issue will be either repealed by the city commission or put on a special election for the citizens to vote on. If you want your voice heard then sign our petition and let’s get this thing out on the ballot and decide once and for all if BSL has a place in Salina.”

As of the latest update, Ms. Currie has a pending warrant against her for the interference with law enforcement charge and on April 14th Ms. Currie was booked for alleged violation of protection order and interfering with a law enforcement officer. It remains to be seen how Ms. Currie's legal situation and advocacy efforts will unfold, with several charges still pending and a warrant awaiting resolution.
