The Salina Police Department took delivery of a 2024 Lenco Bearcat armored rescue vehicle in late December. The vehicle cost $306,903, with 68% of funding coming from private donations and law enforcement resources.
The Police Excellence Foundation of Salina coordinated private funding, including contributions from the Wilson Family Charitable Trust. Additional funding came from the Saline County Sheriff's Office forfeiture funds and the I-70/I-135 Drug Task Force.
The department reports the vehicle will be used by SWAT and Crisis Negotiations teams for situations including active shooter incidents, hostage situations, barricaded subject calls, high-risk warrant service, and natural disaster response. The Bearcat has all-terrain capabilities for use during severe weather emergencies and floods.
Since its arrival, the vehicle has been deployed during one incident where a suspect discharged a firearm at officers. No serious injuries were reported during that incident.
The Lenco Bearcat is equipped with ballistic protection and is designed for use in approaching dangerous situations and evacuating individuals. It will be operated by the department's tactical team during emergency responses.
