Salina Man Arrested After Attempted Shoplifting & Scuffle with Officer

A Salina man was arrested after an alleged attempted shoplifting an a scuffle with an officer over the weekend.

Captain Forrester says that the incident occurred on Sunday, April 23 at 4:30 pm. Officers were sent to Walmart, 2900 S 9th, for a shoplifting. The subject had been contacted by Walmart's Loss Prevention, and was allowed to use the restroom.

The officer arrived as the subject was walking from the restroom to return to the Loss Prevention office. He allegedly attempted to run from the officer, and fell before exiting the store. A physical confrontation allegedly ensued. During the fight, the subject was able to get the officer's radio away from him. However, a Walmart employee was able to call dispatch using the radio for backup. Duing the fight, the officer had his uniform torn.

Two other officers arrived and took the subject into custody, who was identified as 55-year-old Michael Crowder of Salina. Mr Crowder was allegedly in possession of methamphetamine and arrested on the following requested charges:

  • possession of methamphetamine
  • possession of drug paraphernalia
  • theft
  • battery of law enforcement officer
  • felony interference with law enforcement officer
  • criminal damage to property

The items Mr Crowder was allegedly attempting to steal are:

  • 24 Sharpie pens
  • 2" paint brush
  • oil filter
  • air filter
  • polyurethane
  • engine oil
  • gallon of kerosene

The items were estimated at $100.
