Salina officially opened the holiday season Friday evening as residents gathered downtown for the annual Mayor’s Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony. Mayor Greg Lenkiewicz delivered brief remarks before leading the countdown to illuminate the community tree.
In his message, Lenkiewicz highlighted the sense of tradition and togetherness that defines the season.
He noted that the holidays bring “a childlike sense of wonder”—from the excitement in children’s eyes to the joy of neighbors gathering throughout the city. The mayor also encouraged residents to support local businesses as they shop, dine, and celebrate in the coming weeks, emphasizing that “every purchase keeps our town thriving.”
Lenkiewicz addressed the emotional range of the season as well, acknowledging that while the holidays bring joy for many, others face challenges. He urged the community to extend simple acts of kindness, saying even small gestures can “make a world of difference.”
As the crowd prepared for the lighting, the mayor shared his hope that the tree would serve as a reminder of generosity, unity, and hope throughout the season.
With the countdown complete, the Christmas tree lit up downtown Salina, officially starting this year’s festivities.
