Salina City Commission Approves Fire Code Amendment Benefiting Self-Storage Facilities
In a unanimous decision, the Salina City Commission approved an ordinance that amends sections of the International Building Code (IBC) and International Fire Code (IFC) to create a specific exception for self-service storage facilities. This amendment addresses concerns raised by local businesses and citizens regarding fire suppression requirements.
Salina adheres to international building and fire codes but has provisions for local amendments through its Building Advisory Board (BAB). The focus recently has been on mandated sprinkler systems in occupancies exceeding 2,500 square feet used for upholstered furniture or mattresses.
Mr. Augustine, a local businessman, initiated the amendment request, citing the impact on his self-storage project. He proposed aligning with Salina Municipal Code thresholds (7,500 square feet) rather than stricter international standards. The Building Advisory Board reviewed and unanimously recommended this amendment, regarding the distinct operational characteristics of self-storage units compared to traditional mercantile or warehouse settings.
