SALINA, KS – August 2, 2025
Following a day of heavy smoke that pushed air quality into the "Unhealthy" range, conditions in Salina have now improved, though the air remains categorized as Moderate, according to updated data from the local air quality sensor network.
On Friday, August 1, PM2.5 levels in Salina reached an Air Quality Index (AQI) of 154, placing it in the Unhealthy category. The spike was attributed to Canadian wildfire smoke drifting into Central Kansas, prompting widespread advisories and health precautions.
As of Saturday evening, August 2, the PM2.5 AQI has decreased to 87, which falls within the Moderate range. While a noticeable improvement, current guidance from public health officials suggests that individuals with unusually sensitive symptoms should consider limiting outdoor activity, especially if symptoms such as coughing or shortness of breath occur.
The air quality graph shows a steady decline in pollutant concentration since late Friday, transitioning from red (unhealthy) through orange (unhealthy for sensitive groups), and now into yellow (moderate).
No local fires have been reported, but haze remains visible in the area. Residents are encouraged to monitor updates and take precautions as needed, particularly those with respiratory conditions.
