Rolling Hills Zoo Mourns the Loss of Beloved Aardvark, Gumu

Salina, KS – Rolling Hills Zoo is mourning the loss of one of its most cherished residents, Gumu the aardvark, who passed away at the age of 18. Gumu, born at the zoo, was a beloved member of the Rolling Hills family, known for his quirky personality and playful antics. His presence will be deeply missed by both zoo staff and visitors.

Earlier this year, Gumu was diagnosed with cancer, which could only be managed through palliative care. The dedicated veterinary and animal care teams at the zoo worked tirelessly to ensure that Gumu lived comfortably in his final months. Last week, after his condition worsened and his quality of life declined, the difficult decision was made to humanely euthanize him, allowing him to pass peacefully without further suffering.

Born on January 1, 2006, to parents Alice and Max, Gumu spent his entire life at Rolling Hills Zoo, growing from a young and spirited aardvark into an adored senior member of the zoo.

“Working with Gumu and his mother Alice has been a highlight of my career,” shared Head Keeper Devney Olson-Bowen. “Gumu had the biggest personality and loved food more than anything. He had a way of making everyone smile, whether he was digging in the dirt or snow, or playfully exploring his surroundings.”

Known for his love of food, Gumu had a particular fondness for honey, along with raspberries, blackberries, and melon. His keepers fondly recall his determination when it came to getting to his food, exploring new scents, or enjoying his outdoor space.

“He had the sweetest, quirkiest personality,” added one of Gumu’s keepers. “We’ll miss his playful antics, like his unusual sleeping positions, often curled up in a ball or with his legs in the air. He brought so much joy to everyone who worked with him.”

As Rolling Hills Zoo staff mourn his passing, Gumu’s legacy will live on in the hearts of all who had the pleasure of knowing him. “The days will be a little dimmer without him,” said Olson-Bowen. “He will be missed more than anyone can imagine.”
