REAL ID Deadline Approaches: Kansas Residents Have Until May 7, 2025, to Comply for Domestic Air Travel

Topeka, Kan. โ€“ April 2025

Kansas residents who wish to board a domestic flight or enter certain federal facilities will need to have a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card by May 7, 2025, according to the Kansas Department of Revenue.

The requirement, part of a federal law passed in 2005 following the 9/11 Commissionโ€™s recommendations, will affect travelers nationwide. After the May 7 deadline, standard state-issued IDs will no longer be accepted for domestic air travel or for entry into secure federal buildings, such as military bases and nuclear facilities. A valid U.S. passport or other federally approved identification will still be accepted in lieu of a REAL ID.

In Kansas, REAL ID-compliant licenses feature a gold star in the upper right-hand corner. Residents who are unsure whether they currently hold a compliant ID are encouraged to check their license or contact the Kansas Department of Revenue for clarification.

To obtain a REAL ID, individuals must visit a Kansas driverโ€™s license office in person and present specific forms of documentation, including:

  • One proof of lawful presence (such as a birth certificate or U.S. passport)
  • One proof of Social Security number (such as a Social Security card or W-2)
  • Two documents showing Kansas residency (such as a utility bill or bank statement)
  • Legal name change documents, if applicable (such as a marriage certificate or court order)

The Kansas Department of Revenue urges residents not to delay, citing anticipated increases in demand as the deadline nears. Appointments can be scheduled in advance, and a full list of accepted documents is available on the department's website.

The REAL ID Act, originally passed nearly two decades ago, has faced multiple extensions at the federal level. The current May 7, 2025 deadline is considered final by the Department of Homeland Security.

Residents who do not plan to fly or access federal facilities may continue to use a standard Kansas driver's license for general identification purposes, though it will not meet federal requirements for certain activities.
