Public Urged to Avoid Area as Log Fire Smolders Near Bill Burke Park

SALINA — At approximately 11:30 a.m. today, Salina Fire Department units were dispatched to a report of a fire near the river, north of Bill Burke Park. Upon arrival, crews found the main log jam in the area unaffected. However, a smaller pile of logs on the west bank—approximately 200 yards north—was actively burning.

Firefighters accessed the scene through Indian Rock Park and navigated through trees and down the riverbank to reach the fire. The burning debris was largely extinguished, though officials noted that the pile is expected to smolder throughout the day.

The Fire Department plans to revisit the site multiple times today and tomorrow to monitor for flare-ups.

Officials are asking the public to avoid the area, citing the risk of injury from hidden hot spots. Upon arrival, crews confirmed that the main log jam in the area was not on fire.
