Proposed Third Home on Harsh Avenue Would Add to North Salina Infill Housing

A new housing proposal aims to add a small third dwelling on an existing lot at the northwest corner of North Fourth Street and Harsh Avenue.

The Community Housing Development Corporation of Central Kansas (CHDO), represented by Gary Hobbie, has filed a request with the Salina Planning Commission for a conditional-use permit that would allow an additional 660-square-foot, one-bedroom home to be built on a parcel that already contains two dwellings.

Located in an R-2 zoning district, the property includes 15,604 square feet in total. The new unit would bring overall lot coverage to about 16 percentโ€”well within city limitsโ€”and include two off-street parking spaces, as do the existing homes. Plans also call for new landscaping and screening to bring the site into compliance with current multifamily standards.

City staff reviewed the request and recommended approval, noting that the project supports the cityโ€™s long-term housing goals by promoting infill development within the urban core. The Planning Commission will consider the request during its meeting on Tuesday, November 18, at 4 p.m. in Room 107 of the City-County Building.
