Salina Animal Shelter officials say they are awaiting official results from a recent state inspection that was initiated following a complaint, while also addressing misinformation circulating about parvovirus cases and volunteer access.
According to Salina Parks & Recreation Operations Superintendent Andrea Murphy, the shelter underwent a state inspection earlier this week that was triggered by a complaint. At this time, the shelter has not yet received the official findings or results from the state. Murphy noted that over the past two years, the shelter has been subject to six complaint-based inspections, all of which were ultimately found to be unfounded.
Murphy also addressed reports claiming that 20 puppies were euthanized due to parvovirus, calling that information incorrect. She confirmed that three puppies, not 20, were brought to the shelter as a public drop-off and tested positive for parvovirus upon intake. Following established veterinary protocols, the puppies were humanely euthanized.
Out of an abundance of caution, the shelter temporarily closed to the public on the day the puppies were received to allow for thorough cleaning and disinfection of any potentially affected areas. The shelter reopened the following day during normal business hours. Officials stated there is no ongoing parvovirus outbreak at the shelter.
Concerns were also raised about the availability of volunteer opportunities. Murphy confirmed that the shelter is currently accepting volunteer applications. All individuals who have submitted completed applications and waivers have been contacted. As part of the process, applicants must successfully complete a background check through the Cityβs Human Resources Department before attending a volunteer orientation scheduled for later this month.
As the volunteer program restarts, participation is initially limited to 10 volunteers, though officials say there are still openings available and that the program is expected to expand as it becomes fully operational.
City officials emphasized that additional details regarding the state inspection will be shared once the official results are received.
