
Wilfred John Vargas
Wilfred John Vargas, 101, passed away on July 14, 2025, at Bethany Home in Lindsborg, KS. He was born on November 6, 1923, to Benjamin and Paula (Ramirez) Vargas.
Wilfred became an orphan at the age of 9 and was placed, along with his brother Alfred, in the St. Joseph Orphanage in Abilene, KS. The brothers attended school in Abilene.
He joined the United States Marine Corps and served during World War II in the Pacific, as well as in the Korean War. After his military service, Wilfred held numerous jobs, including work as a plumber and carpenter. He was also employed in the electrical field, lead wiring, and sheet metal work; worked as a machinist at an aircraft manufacturing plant; and later worked for the Union Pacific Railroad.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Sarah Cordero, Josephine Sanchez, Hope Rojas, and Francis Vargas; and brothers, Rudolph, Alfred, and Gregorio.
Although Wilfred never had children of his own, he had many nieces and nephews who were very dear to him.
A private graveside service will be held at a later date.

Jackie Lee Gifford
Jackie Lee Gifford, 70, of Salina, passed away on July 14, 2025. Jackie was born on March 11, 1955, in Weatherford, OK, to Billy Don Gifford and Clarissie Hulsey Gifford.
He attended Putnam City West High School in Bethany, OK, and graduated with the class of 1974. Jackie grew up loving and racing cars, becoming a member of the World of Outlaws Sprint Car Series, American Sprint Car Racing Series, National Championship Racing Association, Oklahoma Racing Association, and the National Hot Rod Association.
Jackie competed in both drag racing and sprint car racing. He loved being on the track and never missed a NASCAR race. He also enjoyed building model cars and hot rods in his garage. Off the track and out of the garage, Jackie worked as a carpenter, farmer, and welder. On the farm, he rode and cared for his horses. Above all, Jackie loved spending time with his family and friendsβwhether at the track or at home.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Billy Don Gifford and Clarissie Gifford.
Jackie is survived by his sons, Chad Gifford and Jeremiah Gifford; his daughters, Adrianne Wooley and Stephanie Gifford; and many grandsons and granddaughters.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, July 21, 2025, at 10:00 a.m. at 137 N. 8th St., Salina, KS.
