Nine-Year-Old Ashtyn Hooper Shines with Second Place Finish at NAOAGA Junior Championship

At just nine years old, Ashtyn Hooper has proven that determination and passion can overcome any challenge. Competing in the North American One-Armed Golfers Association (NAOAGA) Junior Championship in Easley, South Carolina, Ashtyn secured a remarkable second-place finish, standing out among competitors with upper limb differences from across the United States.

Ashtyn, who was born without her left hand, has been immersed in the game of golf from a young age. Her father, Jason Hooper, is the head golf coach at South High School, and he introduced her to the sport early on. Starting at local practice facilities, Ashtyn worked tirelessly to develop the strength needed to swing the club. Her journey progressed from playing shortened holes to participating in First Tee classes at the Salina Municipal Golf Course.

"We tried to keep it fun and let her go at her own pace," said Jason. "We wanted her to enjoy playing the game." The Hooper family also got creative in helping Ashtyn navigate challenges on the course. "We made homemade prosthetics to help her attach her arm to the club, allowing her to swing with both arms," Jason added.

Beyond golf, Ashtyn enjoys a variety of activities, including tumbling, basketball, volleyball, singing, and theatre. She is a student at Coronado Elementary School, where she embraces her diverse interests with the same unstoppable spirit she brings to the golf course.

The summer trip to South Carolina was a memorable experience for the Hooper family. "It’s been such a blessing to discover all the opportunities that exist for kids with physical impairments," Jason shared. "It has been so much fun for her and our entire family to meet other people similar to Ashtyn and watch them excel in life, just as she has."

Ashtyn herself was thrilled with the experience. "The trip was amazing," she said. "I was so excited when I got second place, and I can’t wait to do it again!"

Ashtyn's success at the NAOAGA Junior Championship is a powerful testament to her resilience and serves as an inspiration to all, demonstrating that both the game of golf and life itself are open to everyone, regardless of the obstacles they face.
