KWU Flag Football rolls on to 70-0 victory over Bethel

Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football dominated the Bethel College Threshers on Wednesday in a 70-0 victory at Joe. W. Goering Field at Thresher Stadium.

An interception by the Coyotes set up the first score of the day as Lexi Marquez picked off a Bethel pass on the first play of the game, and just moments later, Chihiro Iwata found Jazmine Whitfield for a 4-yard score and the PAT made it 7-0.

On the next Bethel drive, the Coyotes forced a Bethel safety thanks in part to two bad snaps for the Threshers, the second one a 4-yard loss into the end zone for the safety with 8:41 left in the opening quarter.

In the second quarter, the Coyotes scored three times.

The first score came just six seconds into the period as Iwata found Ciaran DeCuir for a 3-yard pass. Iwata then found Whitfield very wide open, as in no one in Harvey County wide open for a 40 yard touchdown pass, and the Coyotes capped the half with a 6-yard pass to Jayla Howes with 10 seconds left in the half to make it 30-0 at the break.

KWU added three more scores in the third quarter, two of them defensive scores. First, Iwata hit Kelsey Tucker for a 6-yard play with 6:51 left in the third.

KWU then got back-to-back Pick-6's, the first a 31-yard return by Angel Roman with 5:10 left, and then Ja'Daa Wilson with a 25-yard return with 3:15 left to make it 49-0 after three quarters.

The Coyotes got three more scores in the fourth. Iwata hit Howes for a 16-yard passing play with 9:20 left.

Wesleyan got another score when Jazmine Whitfield found DeCuir for a 27-yard pass and then converted the 2-point PAT run to make it 63-0.

The final score of the game was another defensive tally for the Coyotes as Alexis Jimenez picked off a Bethel pass and returned it 15 yards for a score with 1:44 left.

Complete statistics of the game were not available at press time, due to a failure of the statistics software.

The Coyotes are scheduled to be back in action on Sunday, hosting Ottawa University in a rematch of last season's KCAC Championship game. The game is scheduled for a 1 p.m. start.
