KWU Flag Football Dominates Southwestern in 38-6 Win

Kansas Wesleyan Flag Football picked up a dominating 38-6 win over the Southwestern Moundbuilders at Gene Bissell Field at JRI Hospitality Stadium at the Graves Family Complex.
 
The Coyotes scored on the first drive of the game as KWU opened with a 26-yard pass from Chihiro Iwata to Jayla Howes and a tacked-on penalty moved the ball down to the Southwestern 30. From there, the Coyotes only needed five more plays, capping the drive with a 5-yard pass from Iwata to Howes for the score and the PAT to Ciaran DeCuir was good.
 
KWU scored again on its next drive as Iwata capped the drive with a 12-yard pass to Angel Roman and the PAT run by Iwata put the Coyotes up 14-0 with 3:53 left in the first.
 
KWU scored again on its next drive with 10:36 left in the second quarter as Iwata found Jazmine Whitfield for a 1-yard scoring play. The drive was aided by two big plays, a 25-yard pass to Na'Kiya Lloyd and a 19-yard pass to Roman.
 
Wesleyan made it 4-for-4 on drives resulting in touchdowns on the next effort as the Coyotes went 49 yards in eight plays capped by a 1-yard pass to Aaliyah Young from Iwata with 3:21 left in the half.
 
Wesleyan's defense stepped up again forcing a turnover on downs by Southwestern, and the Coyotes would add one more score before the half as Iwata found Young from 10 yards out with four seconds left in the half to make it 32-0 at intermission.
 
Neither team scored in the third quarter, but each team got on the board in the fourth.
 
Southwestern scored on its first drive in the fourth as quarterback Miranda Dooley had a 21-yard run on the first play of the drive with a tacked on penalty down to the KWU 21. The Moundbuilders used a bit of trickery on the scoring play as Vivianna Solis found Devina Lytle for a 1-yard score with 6:31 left.
 
The Coyotes took over with 6:31 left and ran out the clock, but didn't go home empty handed. Emilee Buhl led the Coyotes down the field and capped the drive with a 5-yard pass to Whitfield as time expired to give the Coyotes a 38-6 victory.
 
Wesleyan finished with 301 yards of total offense in the game as the quarterbacks combined to complete 76 percent of passes thrown (35 of 46) for 302 yards and six passing touchdowns. Iwata was 24 of 28 for 234 yards and five scores, Buhl was 11 of 18 for 68 yards and one touchdown.
 
KWU had 11 different players catch passes led by Whitfield with 10 receptions for 64 yards and two scores. Young had seven grabs for 46 yards and two scores and three others had three grabs each.
 
Lexi Marquez led KWU's defense with eight flag pulls. Jayla Howes had a sack. KWU held Southwestern to 132 yards of total offense – 50 rushing and 82 passing.
