KWU Baseball rallies twice late to sweep doubleheader from York

Kansas Wesleyan Baseball had to rally late in both of Thursday's contests with the York University Panthers to come away with a sweep of the doubleheader.

The series was switched to Thursday and Friday due to forecasted poor weather over the weekend.

In the opener, the Coyotes had to rally in the ninth to take a lead, then rally again in the 10th inning to win 13-11. In the nightcap, KWU entered the seventh inning trailing 7-4, and used a 10-run frame to come away with the 14-8 win in the second game.

York took a 2-0 lead in the second inning of the first game, which remained scoreless until the fifth when KWU took a 3-2 lead. Reece Bishop reached on an error in the fifth bringing home Jarrett Gable who led off the inning with a single, and three batters later Alex Garcia singled to bring home two runs.

In the bottom of the fifth, York grabbed the lead back at 8-2 thanks to a grand slam and a 2-run single in the inning.

Jacob Williamson's 2-run double and Kendall Foster's 2-run homer plated four runs for the Coyotes in the seventh getting KWU within a run at 8-7. York extended its lead in the bottom of the inning, and the score stayed 9-7 until the top of the ninth.

Down to their final out, the Coyotes got things going with Foster's homer, followed by Gable reaching on an error. Cruz Oxford then homered to put the Coyotes up 10-9.

In the bottom of the ninth, York tied it on a bases loaded wild pitch.

Bishop led off the 10th with a double and then pinch runner Brock Schramme scored on Eric Romero's single. Tow batters later Garcia doubled home a run, and William followed with an RBI single to put the Coyotes up 13-10.

York got a run back in the bottom of the 10th, but could not muster any more of a rally,

Williamson, Foster, Romero and Garcia had three hits each for the Coyotes. Williamson, Foster and Garcia drove in three runs each. Ryan Sandoval picked up the win for the Coyotes as the pitcher of record when the Coyotes took the lead. Starter Thalen Wright went four innings allowing six runs on six hits with seven strikeouts.

In the second game, KWU found itself down 5-0 after two innings allowing two runs to York in the first and three more in the second.

The Coyotes got on the board in the third with a sacrifice fly by Gable after Garcia walked to start the inning.

York extended its lead to 7-1 in the bottom of the third with two runs.

Brandon Zwiener drove in a run in the fourth with a single that scored Coulson Riggs.

The score stayed the same until the sixth when the Coyotes got two more runs to start the comeback. Back-to-back walks by Bishop and Romero got the inning started and later in the frame Garcia singled home a run, and Williamson drove in a run with a triple.

In the seventh, the Coyotes put the offensive pedal to the metal, scoring 10 runs.

KWU loaded the bases on walks to Gable and Oxford and a single by Bishop. A passed ball allowed the first run of the inning to score. And pinch hitter Kacen Shreffler walked to load them again, only to see Zwiener unload them launching a ball to left for a grand slam giving the Coyotes the lead.

Wesleyan wasn't content there. Garcia walked and Williamson doubled setting up Foster's RBI single that yielded a second run on an error. After Gable singled in his second at bat of the inning, Oxford homered again, a 3-run shot that gave the Coyotes a 14-7 lead.

York got a run back in the bottom of the inning.
