KDOT Explains I-70 Closure Protocol: County Photos Highlight Winter Storm Impact

Severe winter weather has prompted the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT) to close eastbound I-70 in Ellsworth County between mile markers 224 and 227. The closure was implemented due to multiple slide-offs, crashes, and deteriorating conditions caused by freezing drizzle.

Salina311 spoke with KDOT to gain insight into the decision-making process for closing highways. KDOT explained that they rely on multiple pieces of data, including reports of accidents and communications with the Kansas Highway Patrol (KHP), to determine when a closure is necessary.

Motorists are advised to anticipate additional closures as the winter storm continues to impact the area. Road conditions are expected to worsen, and drivers are urged to use caution.
