Salina sees 71 mph wind gusts, limited damage reported
Salina recorded a peak wind gust of 71 mph on Thursday as a powerful wind event moved through central Kansas, according to National Weather Service data.
Despite the extreme gusts, damage within Salina was limited, with reports primarily involving downed tree limbs and minor debris. No widespread structural damage was reported in the city.
Conditions were more severe along Interstate 70 just outside Salina, where a semi tractor-trailer tipped over during the height of the wind event, underscoring the danger high-profile vehicles faced.
The strong winds contributed to blowing dust, reduced visibility, and travel disruptions across the region. Officials urged motorists, particularly those operating high-profile vehicles, to delay travel during high wind warnings.
Wind speeds gradually diminished later in the afternoon and evening as conditions improved across central Kansas.
