Goddard Man Arrested in Connection to Catalytic Converter Theft

A Goddard man is arrested after a Deputy observes a vehicle at a salvage yard in western Saline County.

Captain Hughes says that the incident occurred on Tuesday, May 9 at 7:44 am. A Deputy on patrol allegedly noticed and vehicle at Heath Auto Salvage, 2640 W Old 40 Highway. On investigating the circumstances of the vehicle on the side of the road, the Deputy made contact with 45-year-old Toby Nelson of Goddard, Kansas.

While talking to Mr Nelson, the Deputy became suspicious of his reason for being there, and allegedly discovered Mr Nelson had a suspended drivers license. While being placed under arrest for the drivers license suspension, Mr Nelson allegedly became resistant to arrest and was ultimately tased.

An investigation allegedly revealed that Mr Nelson had just gotten done stealing a catalytic converter and tires from the salvage yard, with an estimated value of $500. Also during the investigation, methamphetamine was allegedly located inside the vehicle.

Mr Nelson was arrested on the following requested charges:

  • Driving while Suspended
  • Possession of Methamphetamine Paraphernalia
  • Interference with Law Enforcement Officer
  • Criminal Trespass
  • Damage to Property
  • Theft

The alleged vehicle that the catalytic came from is a 1990 Ford Van. When asked if there was any connection to this case and any past catalytic converter theft, Captain Hughes replied, "I don't think there's any direct or specific knowledge of that, however I know our investigators are looking into possible relationships with other incidents."
