Furry Residents First: Winter Prep at Salina Animal Shelter with Director Monique Hawley

As winter weather bears down on Salina, the city's Animal Shelter is prepared to protect its furry residents from the harsh elements. With protocols in place and dedicated staff on call, the shelter ensures the safety and comfort of its animals, even in the most severe conditions.

"We are a 24/7 facility, so there is always an Animal Control Officer or staff member either at the shelter or on call to respond to animal-related calls or to be present at the shelter itself," said Monique Hawley, a representative from the Salina Animal Shelter. The facility is equipped with a generator that guarantees warmth, light, and air conditioning for the animals year-round.

During extreme weather events, the shelter faces unique challenges. Local staff often step up, sometimes staying overnight, to ensure the animals receive proper care when out-of-town employees are unable to travel. "The animals are our top priority," Hawley emphasized.

To combat the cold, the shelter provides all dogs and cats with blankets and bedding in their kennels. The facility maintains temperatures in compliance with state requirements, creating a comfortable environment for all its residents.

While the shelter is well-prepared for winter storms, they always welcome community support. "We can always use blankets or dog and cat beds, as they tend to wear out quickly with constant washing," Hawley noted, highlighting a specific need during the colder months.

Past winter storms have presented additional challenges, particularly in maintaining outdoor areas. "Digging out the small turfed dog park and our covered patio for dog walkers can be time-consuming," Hawley explained. Staff members take extra precautions to remove snow and ensure paw safety for the dogs who enjoy winter play.

The shelter's commitment extends beyond its walls. During severe weather events, animal control officers navigate treacherous conditions to respond to calls and assist animals in need throughout Salina.

As winter progresses, the Salina Animal Shelter continues its mission to provide a safe haven for the city's animals, rain, snow, or shine. Residents looking to support the shelter’s efforts can contribute by donating blankets or pet beds, helping keep Salina's homeless animals warm and comfortable through the cold season.
