Just in time to help book lovers build up their summer reading material, the Friends of the Salina Public Library will be hosting a used book sale. In addition to gently used books representing various genres, sale items will also include movies, audiobooks, and music CDs. The sale will be open to the public on Saturday, April 13 from 10 am–3 pm and Sunday, April 14 from noon–3 pm. On Sunday afternoon, shoppers will be able to fill a bag of reading and listening materials for just $5.
April 13 marks the end of National Library Week. Mayor Bill Longbine approved a proclamation declaring April 7-13 as National Library Week in Salina. The theme for this year’s celebration is “Ready, Set, Library.” Many special activities and events will be held at the library during this week. Hundreds of items for the Friends’ sale have been donated by community members and pulled from the library’s collection. The library pulls duplicate items or items that have not been checked out in a long time. Community patrons donate materials all year long. Members of the Friends sort these items by category and genre to make it easier for book sale visitors to find just what they need.
Gretta Kontas, President of the Friends, says “Much of the credit is owed to the individuals who work long hours to sort the books and then work to ensure that the sale runs smoothly.”
The Friends is a non-profit organization of volunteers who act as a “booster club” for the library and staff. Members of the Friends may shop the book sale early on Friday, April 12 from 4– 6 pm. The cost is $10 a year to become a Friend and memberships can be purchased at the sale. All of the proceeds from the sale will go to Youth Services programs. The sale will be on the lower level of the library. Cash and checks will be accepted.
