A fatal traffic collision early Friday morning has left one person dead and another facing serious criminal charges in rural Saline County.

The crash occurred at approximately 5:35 a.m. on August 8, 2025, near the intersection of South Reese Road and K-140 Highway, according to the Saline County Sheriff's Office.

According to the Saline County Sheriff's Department, a Chevrolet truck traveling eastbound on K-140 was struck by a Jeep Grand Cherokee that was traveling westbound. The Jeep entered the eastbound lane, causing a head-on collision between the two vehicles.

The driver of the Chevrolet, 61-year-old Mark Sommerfeld of Brookville, Kansas, was transported by Emergency Medical Services to Salina Regional Health Center with serious, non-life-threatening injuries. However, his passenger, 55-year-old Deanna Sommerfeld, also of Brookville, was pronounced dead at the scene. Both victims were properly restrained at the time of the crash.

The alleged driver of the Jeep Grand Cherokee, 32-year-old Kayla Errobo of Lorraine, Kansas, was not present when deputies arrived at the scene. She was later located at an address in Ellsworth, Kansas, at approximately 8:26 a.m.

Errobo was taken into custody and booked into the Saline County Jail on multiple charges, including:

  • Murder in the second degree
  • Failure to report an injury accident
  • Circumvention of ignition interlock device
  • Probation violation

Sheriff's deputies noted that Errobo sustained only minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.

The Saline County Sheriff's Office is actively investigating the incident and encourages anyone with information to contact their office at 785-826-6500.

"Further updates will be provided as they become available," said Operations Captain Jim Hughes in a statement released Friday.

The crash remains under investigation, and additional charges may be pending as the case develops.
