The new dog park at Parker Park is entering the final stages of construction, according to updates provided at Monday's Salina Parks and Recreation Advisory Board meeting.
Parks and Recreation Director Jeff Hammond reported that pavilion structures for the dog park arrived approximately 10 days ago and installation is currently underway.
"They were pouring concrete yesterday to finish off the footer cap to do a replacement strip and then they'll be putting the roof on," Hammond told the board. "Then the fencing person will come and finish off the fencing."
The new dog park is located on Second Street and will serve as the primary community dog park for that area of Salina. Hammond indicated the project is now in its final phases.
Once the Parker Park dog park is completed and open to the public, the city plans to close the existing dog park located behind the animal shelter. That space will then be reserved exclusively for animal shelter use.
The pavilions at the Parker Park location are similar to those that will be installed at the Barkley Park dog park as part of separate improvements to that facility.
No specific opening date was announced during the meeting.
