A proposal to open a group day care home in a vacant Birch Drive residence will go before the Salina Planning Commission next week.
Applicant Tobi Vogan, representing At Home Properties LLC, has requested a conditional-use permit to operate a day care for up to 12 children at 826 Birch Drive, located across from Centennial Park in a single-family residential (R-1) district.
The property is currently unoccupied. No exterior changes are proposed, and the homeβs fenced back yard would be used as the outdoor play area. City code requires one off-street parking space per provider and one for loading and unloading, meaning at least three spaces must be available on site.
Planning staff recommended approval if parking and child-capacity conditions are met. This marks one of the first conditional-use applications under the cityβs updated 2023 child-care zoning rules, which streamlined licensing for in-home day cares while keeping requirements for operations based out of unoccupied houses.
The Planning Commission will review the request on Tuesday, November 18, at 4 p.m. in Room 107 of the City-County Building.
