A cryptocurrency investor fell victim to a sophisticated phone scam on January 14, when a caller impersonating a security representative convinced them to transfer their digital assets to another account.
The victim, who had been experiencing account difficulties, received a call from a man speaking with a British accent who claimed the account had been compromised. The caller persuaded the victim to move their cryptocurrency to what was presented as a secure account, but instead resulted in the victim losing access to their funds entirely.
The total financial impact of the theft is still being calculated.
Due to the complex nature of cryptocurrency fraud, local authorities are considering referring the case to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for further investigation.
Law enforcement officials continue to investigate the matter.
