County Commission Approves Sale of Former Brookville Fire Station as New Facility Nears Completion

The Saline County Commission unanimously approved the sale of the former Brookville Fire Station during their September 2nd meeting, following substantial completion of the new fire station facility.

Deputy County Administrator Hannah Bett informed the commission that keys to the new Brookville Fire Station were received on Thursday, with the fire district currently planning their upcoming move to the new location.

The former fire station, located at 122 East Anderson in Brookville, is a 1,300-square-foot building constructed in either 1970 or 1960, according to conflicting records presented at the meeting. The property is valued at $50,100, just over the $50,000 threshold that requires a formal sale process under state statute.

"State statute actually addresses the sale of real property by the county if it is something that is valued over $50,000," Bett explained to commissioners.

The commission approved offering the building for sale through a sealed bid process to the person or entity presenting the "highest and best bid." Bids will be accepted until Friday, October 10th, with an award expected to be made by the commission on October 21st.

The public notice of sale will be published once each week for three consecutive weeks in the newspaper, with costs estimated at approximately $100, which will be paid for by the fire district's budget.

During the discussion, Commissioner Weese inquired whether the county had a need for the property for storage of equipment such as road graders in the Brookville area. Darren Fishel clarified that county equipment will be housed at the new fire station, making the old facility unnecessary for county operations.

The commission approved the request for action (RFA 2025-128) with a 5-0 vote.
