County Budget Update Shows Courts Outpacing Budget While Health Department and Sheriff's Office Improve Financially

A recent financial update presented to the Saline County Commission reveals mixed results across county departments, with the District Court exceeding its budget while the Health Department and Sheriff's Office show financial improvements.

County Administrator Phillip Smith-Hanes presented the quarterly financial update during Monday's regular commission meeting, highlighting departmental trends through the first nine months of the fiscal year.

The District Court has already spent 83.4% of its yearly budget allocation, putting it on pace to exceed its annual funding. According to Smith-Hanes, the court's expenditures are "a little ahead of where they should be at this point in the year."

In contrast, the Health Department is trending positively, having spent only 60.1% of its annual budget. This represents a significant improvement from previous quarters when the department was tracking at approximately 70% of budget utilization.

The Sheriff's Office is also showing better financial positioning than in previous reports. Smith-Hanes noted the department has spent 72.9% of its budget, which aligns closely with expectations at this point in the fiscal year.

County-wide, revenue collection remains strong with 86.3% of anticipated funds received, while expenditures stand at 74.7% of budget. Property tax collections have reached 98.8% of projections, and sales tax revenue is tracking at 78.1% of budgeted expectations.

Other key financial indicators presented in the report included:

- Community Corrections has spent 71.7% of its budget

- Emergency Management is at 67.5% of budget utilization

- The Road and Bridge Department has used 69.3% of its allocation

The quarterly financial update serves as a tool for commissioners to monitor departmental spending patterns and make informed decisions as the fiscal year progresses.
