The Saline County Commission approved a backdated disaster declaration Tuesday for flooding that occurred on June 18, which led to a log jam in the Smoky Hill River.
Emergency Management Director Michelle Weis presented the request to commissioners, explaining that a damage assessment had been submitted to the state on July 10 for flooding experienced in Saline County and across the region.
"It was advised by our regional coordinator that the next step in the damage assessment process was to get a disaster declaration for that instance," Weis told commissioners. "So if it did get moved on through the process of public assistance, FEMA would have this on record for them."
Commissioner Hay asked whether the declaration might need to be extended due to the possibility of additional rain. Weis clarified that as long as the initial declaration is in place, any continued or compounding issues would be covered under that original declaration.
When asked about coordination with the City of Salina, Weis confirmed that her office has "done what I am required to do and what I can do for them," including assisting with resources and contacts. She noted that the affected portion of the channel falls within the city's boundaries.
Commissioner Weese sought to confirm that the purpose of the declaration was to enable the city to access assistance and resources, which Weis affirmed.
The commission unanimously adopted Resolution 25-2431, officially declaring the disaster. The declaration is expected to help facilitate potential federal assistance should the damage assessment move forward in the FEMA process.
