Commissioners Discuss Ways to Address Long Lines at County Tag Office

Saline County Commissioners addressed concerns about long lines at the county tag office during their October 1st meeting.

Commissioner Vidrickson brought up the issue, noting that he had observed 17 people waiting in line outside the office that morning, with additional customers being served inside.

Vidrickson emphasized the need for action, stating, "We talk about it and we shake our head and we move on." He suggested scheduling a meeting with the treasurer's office to brainstorm solutions, asking, "Do we need more room? Do we need more people?"

The commissioner proposed various formats for addressing the issue, including a study session, part of a regular meeting, a special meeting, or adding it to the end of a current meeting. He stressed the importance of finding ways the commission could help improve the situation.

County Administrator Philip Smith-Hanes informed the commission that he and the treasurer are meeting the following day to discuss a campaign aimed at better informing the public about alternatives to standing in line. These options include scheduling appointments and paying online.

Smith-Hanes expressed openness to having the treasurer address the commission about other issues related to the tag office. He suggested potentially scheduling such a discussion for a meeting later in the month.

The commissioners acknowledged that while the tag office is not under direct control of the County Commission (the tag office is under the control of the state of Kansas), they can assist with staffing and other resources to help alleviate the problem.
