City to Begin Ultrathin Bonded Asphalt Surface Project

APAC Shears of Salina will commence the City of Salina’s 2024 Ultrathin Bonded Asphalt Surface (UBAS) project from Thursday, August 15, through Friday, August 16, weather permitting. This annual project is part of the city’s ongoing efforts to extend the lifespan of its roadways.

Motorists are advised to avoid the work zones when possible or proceed with caution to ensure the safety of the crews working on the project.

The UBAS method is a preventative maintenance technique widely used across Kansas. It involves applying a thin layer of coarse aggregate hot mix over a special asphalt membrane in a single pass with a spray paver. This membrane prevents water from seeping into the asphalt and creates a strong bond with the existing road surface. The resulting overlay allows water to disperse quickly, reducing roadway spray and improving visibility and traction during wet conditions. UBAS has proven effective in other cities, providing a reliable friction surface in wet weather.

This work marks the first installment of Salina’s 2024 UBAS maintenance project, with the total project cost across all installments amounting to $642,400.
