The City of Salina has scheduled a Free Landfill Day for Saturday, October 4, from 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Salina Municipal Solid Waste Landfill located at 4292 S. Burma Rd.
Saline County residents presenting a county license plate will be permitted to dispose of residential trash at no charge during the designated hours. Vehicles from outside the county will be subject to standard disposal fees, while commercial haulers will receive priority service with regular rates applied.
The city has implemented specific requirements for the event. All loads must be properly secured or covered with tarps to prevent littering during transport. Loads that are not secured will incur double the standard disposal rate. Officials anticipate lines and potential delays, and customers are advised to follow staff instructions, observe posted signage, and remain on approved roadways.
Several categories of materials will not be accepted during Free Landfill Day, including automobiles, batteries, hazardous or toxic waste, corrosive or reactive materials, explosives, flammable waste, liquids such as paint, machinery, storage tanks, and vehicle or equipment wreckage.
Certain materials will be accepted but will require payment of standard fees. These include brick, concrete, rock, aggregates, commercial loads, items containing Freon (with proper certification), roofing and construction materials, boats, sheds, trailers, tires, and waste requiring a Kansas Department of Health and Environment Special Waste Permit.
The landfill facility will close at 2:00 p.m. sharp, with no entry permitted after the closing time regardless of remaining lines. Normal business hours and fee structure will resume on Monday, October 6.
A complete fee schedule is available on the city's website at salina-ks.gov/landfill. Residents with questions may contact the facility at (785) 826-7395.
