City Issues Guidelines for Political Sign Placement During Election Season

The City of Salina has released regulations governing the placement of temporary political signs for the 2025 election season, which runs from September 21 through November 4.

Under the city's guidelines, residents of single-family homes may place an unlimited number of political signs on their private property and in adjacent public right-of-way areas, provided each sign does not exceed 8 square feet in area or 6 feet in height.

Different rules apply to apartment complexes, nursing homes, and commercial or industrial properties. On private property at these locations, property owners may place up to two signs measuring no more than 32 square feet in area and 6 feet in height, plus an unlimited number of smaller signs that do not exceed 8 square feet and 6 feet.

All signs placed in public right-of-way areas are subject to the 8-square-foot, 6-foot height limit regardless of property type.

Prohibited Locations

The city prohibits political signs in several specific areas. Signs cannot be placed within clear sight triangles, defined as 14 feet from any corner or edge of intersections involving public or private streets, alleys, or driveways. Street medians, right-of-way areas adjacent to parks or recreational facilities, and utility infrastructure including poles, street lights, permanent sign posts, benches, and trees are also off-limits.

State law imposes additional restrictions around voting locations. Kansas Statute 25-2430 prohibits political activities, including signs, within 250 feet of polling place entrances on Election Day and advance voting locations during the advance voting period.

The city has created a Political Signs and Electioneering Map showing polling locations and the restricted 250-foot zones, available at https://www.salina-ks.gov/maps.

Voting Schedule

Advance voting for the 2025 general election will take place from October 15 through November 4 at the Saline County Clerk's office, located at 300 West Ash Street. This serves as the only advance voting location for general elections.

The regulations are designed to help citizens comply with both the Salina Municipal Code and Kansas Statutes while participating in the electoral process through sign placement.

City officials said the guidelines aim to balance free speech rights with public safety and aesthetic considerations during the election period.
