At their regular meeting on April 17, 2023 Salina's City Commission proclaimed the week of April 17 through 21, 2023 as National Work Zone Awareness Week in the City of Salina.

According to nwzaw.org, "National Work Zone Awareness Week (NWZAW) is an annual spring campaign held at the start of construction season to encourage safe driving through highway work zones. The key message is for drivers to use extra caution in work zones."

According to the Kansas Department of Transportation's website, in Kansas during 2022, 11 motorists and two pedestrians were killed and 341 others were injured in work zone related crashes.

Nearly 90 percent of the people injured or killed in work zone crashes each year   are motorists, and more than half of these fatalities and injuries are caused by:   inattentive driving; following too closely; and speeding in construction zones, making work zone safety an important issue for motorists and construction workers alike.
